Follow these simple steps to revive your slow computer and use it effectively.

1.Disable unneeded windows Services
Every user has different requirements and not all default windows services are needed, so disable some of it.

Go to Start >> Run, type-in services.msc then hit enter. Windows services manager will open.
On the right pane, there youll see all installed services to your computer. Double-clicking on of it will open its properties window where your can set the Startup type and Service status.

Set the following services to manual:
* Fast User Switching Compatibility Service
* Application Layer Gateway Service
* Background Intelligent Transfer Service
* COM+ Event System Service
* COM+ System Application Service
* Cryptographic Services Service
* Distributed Link Tracking Client Service
* Indexing Service
* IPSEC Services Service
* Network Location Awareness (NLA)
* Service Portable Media Serial Number
* Service Print Spooler Service (You may set it to automatic, if you have a printer attached and print frequently.)
* TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service
* Telephony Service
* Terminal Services Service
* WebClient Service

Set the following services to disable:
* Alerter Service
* ClipBook Service
* Distributed Transaction Coordinator Service
* DNS Client Service
* Error Reporting Service
* Messenger Service
* MS Software Shadow Copy Provider Service (Set it to manual, if you use the MS Backup utility)
* Net Logon Service
* NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing Service
* Network DDE Service
* Network DDE DSDM Service
* NT LM Security Support Provider Service
* Performance Logs and Alerts Service
* QoS RSVP Service
* Remote Desktop Help Session Manager Service (Set this to manual, if you use remote desktop)
* Remote Registry Service
* Routing and Remote Access Service
* Server Service (If youre on a network, dont disable it )
* Smart Card Service
* Smart Card Helper Service
* SSDP Discovery Service
* Telnet Service
* Upload Manager Service
* Volume Shadow Copy Service
* Wireless Zero Configuration Service (Dont disable it, if using a laptop and a wireless router)

For every disabled services means additional free resources and setting it to manual means that the service will only run when needed.

2.Free up Disk Space
Ccleaner is my favorite tool for this. Install and run it. Once its open click Analyze to see what files are due for deletion, Click Run Cleaner to clean it.

Files ccleaner checks for deletion:
* Internet Explorers: Temporary Internet files, Cookies, History, Recently Typed URLs, Index.dat files, Last Download Location
* Windows Explorer: Recent Documents, Run (in Start Menu), Search Autocomplete, Other Explorer MRUs
* System: Empty Recycle Bin, Temporary Files, Clipboard, Memory Dumps, chkdsk File Fragments, Windows Log Files, Start Menu Shortcuts, Desktop Shortcuts
* Applications: Browsers Cookies, Download History, Internet Cache, Internet History. Other application that uses temporary files will also be cleaned up.

Windows uses Disk Cleanup (cleanmgr) as its default tool.

3.Disable unneeded startup application
Ccleaner also do it. It is one of its feature, while in Ccleaner go to Tools >> Startup. All startup items will be listed on right pane. Click one of the items and click Disable or Delete. I prefer disabling than deleting so you may enable it once needed.

Another good thing about ccleaner is it will not ask to restart the computer after disabling some of the items and it will also not display the confirmation dialog.

Windows uses msconfig.msc as its default tool.

4.Uninstall unneeded applications
Uninstalling unneeded application would translate to free hard drive space and memory usage. Some application leaves folders and file in Program Files directory, manual deletion is necessary. There are also left over registries that need to be cleaned up, use Ccleaner to do that.

5.Clean up registry
Registry being the database of windows setting and configuration when clogged will definitely slow a computer, so clean it up!

Registry cleaning is delicate task if done manually, use of tool is a wiser idea. Ccleaner is also good at this. Open Ccleaner the go to Registry >> Scan for Issues, registry will be scanned and will list unneeded items. Click Fix selected issues to start cleaning.

Items Ccleaner checks: Missing Shared dlls, Unused File Extensions, ActiveX and Class Issues, Type Libraries, Applications, Fonts, Application Paths, Help Files, Installer, Obsolete Software, Run at Startup, Start Menu Ordering, MUI cache.

6.Remove unneeded/unused fonts
Fonts are loaded during Windows startup, so more fonts means more wasted time loading.

To remove fonts go Control Panel >> Fonts or C:\WINDOWS\Fonts. All fonts will be listed, carefully select unwanted fonts and delete it. Double clicking a font will give its preview. Note that Windows uses fonts so make sure that you dont delete it.

7.Scan Disk
Scan disk is Windows default tool to check hard drive surface for bad sectors.

Open My Computer >> Right-click on of the drive >> properties >> tool tab >> in Error-checking click Check Now button. Check Disk window will open. Put check on Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors. Click Start.

8.Defrag your drives
It is like sorting and putting data files together which makes it easier to access.

Right-click youre My Computer and choose Manage, click Disk Defragmenter, click Analyze to see if youre drive needs defragmentation then click Defrag to continue.

9.Optimize VGA settings
VGA setting or display setting is highly dependent on the brand and model of the GPU. Disabling some of unnecessary features would definitely spare some resources.

10.Adjust paging file size
This is good. Its like using your hard drive space to act like a temporary memory to boost performance. Adjust your page file to the maximum.

Righ-click My computer >> Advanced tab >> click Performance >> Advanced tab, on virtual memory click change button. Change the initial and maximum size based on the available space. Click Set.

11.Install and use good antivirus and antimalware
I use Avast as antivirus and Malwarebytes as antimalware. Regular update and regular scan would help eliminate/minimize compute virus infections.

12.Reinstallation of windows
Setting your computer to its brand new state is always a good option. Just make sure you have all the back up of your important documents, application and windows drivers. Failing to do that is disaster.

13.Update your Windows
Windows update should be downloaded and installed automatically. Make sure that Automatic Updates is turned On.

14.Upgrade RAM
RAM upgrade is known as cheapest computer upgraded that would have significant effect on performance. 2 GB is now common.
